Testosterone deficiency

What is testosterone deficiency?

Testosterone deficiency, also known as low T or hypogonadism, is a condition where the body does not produce enough of the hormone testosterone. This can occur in both men and women as we age but is more common in men over 30.

Symptoms include low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, and depression. Signs can develop gradually over years making low T hard to recognize. Getting tested is recommended if multiple symptoms exist.

Causes stem from problems in the testes' production of testosterone. This includes injury, infection, chemotherapy, alcohol abuse, obesity, sleep apnea, autoimmune disorders, medications, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, radiation treatment, and genetic diseases. As men age, testosterone levels also naturally decline at a rate of 1-2% per year after 30.

Diagnosis involves a physical exam and blood test to check total and free testosterone levels. Levels below 300 ng/dL are considered low T. Testing also rules out other causes with similar symptoms like thyroid disorders.

Treatment helps restore testosterone levels to improve energy, sex drive, body composition, mood and prevent long term health issues like osteoporosis and heart disease. Options include:

An endocrinologist can best determine which treatment method is appropriate based on the patient’s health history and goals for therapy.

Regular monitoring ensures testosterone levels are optimized by treatment without raising red blood cell counts too high. This reduces risks like enlarged prostate, worsening sleep apnea and stimulating unwanted hair or acne.
